Northern Illinois University (NIU) is a public research university in DeKalb, Illinois, with satellite centers in Chicago, Hoffman Estates, Naperville, Rockford, and Oregon. The university is composed of seven degree-granting colleges and has a student body of 25,000 with over 225,000 alumni. Notable alumni include filmmaker Robert Zemeckis ("Back to the Future," "Who Framed Roger Rabbit," "Forrest Gump"); "The Wire" actor Wood Harris; and actresses Joan Allen and Carrie Snodgress.

Library access: The main university library (Founders Memorial Library) is open to the public. Designated computers on the first floor are available for public use. Courtesy cards with borrowing privileges are available for alumni, state of Illinois residents and members of Friends of NIU Libraries. Membership in the latter costs $35 per year and adds interlibrary loan eligibility. The university also has reciprocal borrowing arrangements with other academic libraries through I-Share.
