A look back at the year’s major steampunk gatherings as the world slowly returned to normal
After a year or so of pandemic-induced restrictions, steampunk gatherings in 2021 slowly returned to the real world, and it was clear from the enthusiasm surrounding the events that folks were eager to meet again in person. See the highlights in our gallery.
As the COVID-19 Delta variant causes a surge in outbreaks, several large fan conventions, including TeslaCon and Dragon Con, have announced stricter health policies that will require all or most attendees to show proof of vaccination.
The long wait will soon be over for many steampunk fans eager to congregate in the eastern U.S., as three events are scheduled for this weekend: The Key City Steampunk Festival in Central Pennsylvania, the Southern Maine Steampunk Fair at the Brick Store Museum, and MegaCon in Orlando.
Another sign that steampunks are emerging from pandemic-induced hibernation: Professor Elemental and Frenchy and the Punk have both announced concert dates for 2021. Frenchy and the Punk also announced a new line of themed merchandise.
The organizers previously announced that they would hold off on selling tickets until they were sure they could run the convention within safety protocols. This year’s theme is “Cthulhu vs. The Martians.”
Virtual SteamCon, a new Facebook group, is the latest effort to replicate a convention experience online.
