This Weekend: Cogs & Corsets, Freaky Mutant Weirdo Fest, and More

It’s another busy weekend for steampunk fans in the U.S. and UK with events in Illinois, Wisconsin, New Jersey, Newark-on-Trent, and West Sussex. They include the return of Cogs & Corsets and the Cog County Faire in the Midwest, an expanded Freaky Mutant Weirdo Variety Show in New Jersey, and a celebration of Queen Elizabeth presented by the Newark Steampunk Society.
Cogs & Corsets: A Steampunk Happening
This free steampunk festival is held at multiple indoor and outdoor locations in historic downtown Bloomington, Illinois. The program includes a steampunk market, tea dueling, teapot racing, kids’ activities, costume contest, Nerf dueling, workshops, panels, and a maker exhibition.
Special guests include artists Brian Fadrosh and Sheila Fadrosh (aka Lady De L’Etoile), who will present a series of workshops geared toward cosplayers. Jason Dean, founder of the International Steampunk Symposium and Chicago Steampunk Exposition, will present a panel on Victorian Fae and the revival of magic in 19th century Britain.
Workshops and panels will be held at the Museum of History and Inside Out Accessible Art Cooperative. Face masks are encouraged but not required at the indoor venues.
Cog County Faire VIII
This event returns to the White Lake Beach Resort in Montello, Wisconsin, with “The Road to Oz” as the theme. The program includes a Steampunk Regatta, steampunk swap meet, midway games, multiple “booze cruises,” and a variety show and DJ dance party on Saturday night. DJ Vourteque leads an entertainment lineup that also includes Sons of Temperance, Mermaid Echo, and The Buckboard Truckers.
The festivities kick off on Thursday night, June 2, but most of the action takes place Friday and Saturday, with a “Mimosas Booze Cruise” set for Sunday.
The site is a lakeside resort about 60 miles north of Madison.
Freaky Mutant Weirdo Variety Show
Previously an indoor event, the Freaky Mutant Weirdo Variety Show will take on a new form this year as an outdoor steampunk festival. It’s organized by A Halo Called Fred and will also feature performances by Frenchy and the Punk, This Way to the Egress, Trio of Madness, The Munchausen Society, and the Karnevil sideshow. Activities also include a steampunk market and teapot racing.
The event will culminate with an all-star jam session featuring A Halo Called Fred, Frenchy and the Punk, and This Way to the Egress.

Newark Platinum Jubilee Festival
The Newark Steampunk Society in Newark, UK, is producing this free four-day festival celebrating the 70-year reign of Queen Elizabeth II. Activities include a Meet & Greet at the Flying Circus pub on Thursday, June 2; a Steampunk Artisan & Curiosity Market on Friday, June 3; and a Steampunk Jubilee Picnic on Saturday, June 4, at Newark Castle with a free performance by Captain of the Lost Waves.
The society will also present the ticketed Steampunk Jubilee Ball on Saturday night.
Floral Fringe Fair
The Leonardslee Lakes & Gardens near Horsham, UK, will host this “eclectic and quirky event” with vintage/steampunk elements. Activities include an art gallery/maker showcase, traders, street dining, classic car display, and live music.
The venue is a large woodland garden in South East England originally established in the Victorian era. It happens Saturday, June 4, and Sunday, June 5. Entry costs £10.00 for adults and £5.00 for children under 14. Kids under 4 are admitted for free. Learn more on the website.
