Streaming Guide – August 2023

Tuesday, August 1, 2023

With summer blockbusters like Barbie and Oppenheimer blazing in theaters, pickings are slim this month on streaming services, especially when it comes to new arrivals with steampunk appeal.

Fans of Aurelio Voltaire may want to check out Labyrinth on Hulu, as the 1986 musical fantasy served as the inspiration for Voltaire’s latest studio album. The widely panned movie adaptation Wild Wild West arrives this month on Max, and Prime Video subscribers can stream all six episodes of Good Omens Season 2, which premiered July 27.

Our monthly streaming guides focus on titles arriving each month on the major streaming services. See “Our Ultimate Streaming Guide” for a more comprehensive look at steampunk-related movies and series on these services.

Unless otherwise noted, these productions debuted on Aug. 1. We can only confirm new arrivals in the U.S., but some titles may also be available on these streaming services in other countries.

Major arrivals on Disney+ include the streaming premiere of Guardians of The Galaxy: Vol. 3, the final installment of the Marvel series, and the debut of Star Wars: Ahsoka, a new series starring Rosario Dawson as former Jedi Knight Ahsoka Tano. The latter premieres on Wednesday, Aug. 23 with two episodes.

Labyrinth (1986) – Jim Henson directed this musical fantasy, which is most notable for David Bowie’s performance as the Goblin King. It fared poorly at the box office but is now regarded as a cult classic.

One big fan of the movie is singer/songwriter Aurelio Voltaire, whose 2022 album The Black Labyrinth: A Requiem for the Goblin King serves as both a musical sequel and Bowie tribute. It features 15 of Bowie’s former bandmates plus guests from My Chemical Romance, Trans Siberian Orchestra, Vision Video, The Cog is Dead, and Frenchy and the Punk.

Also arriving in August: Hotel Transylvania (2012) on Aug. 1 and Snowpiercer (2014) on Aug. 29. Movies departing at the end of the month include Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter(2011) and The Shape of Water (2017).

Wild Wild West (1999) – Barry Sonnenfeld’s widely panned film adaptation of the 1960s TV series is back, starring Will Smith as U.S. Army Captain James West and Kevin Kline in dual roles as sidekick Artemus Gordon and U.S. President Ulysses S. Grant.

Smith later described it as his worst movie. It scored big at the Razzie Awards, grabbing trophies for Worst Film, Worst Director, Worst Screen Couple, Worst Screenplay, and Worst Original Song.

The original series, widely regarded as a prototype for steampunk, is now streaming on Prime Video.

Titles leaving at the end of the month include Hellboy (2004), Journey to the Center of the Earth (1959), Journey 2: The Mysterious Island (2012), and Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (1985).

Notable arrivals this month include Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure (1989) and its 1991 sequel, Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey.

Prime Video

As noted in last month’s streaming guide, Season 2 of Good Omens arrived on July 28, with Michael Sheen and David Tennant reprising their respective roles as the fussy angel Aziraphale and his demon pal Crowley. Notable arrivals for August include Galaxy Quest (1999) and The Addams Family (2019), both on Aug. 1, and Snowpiercer (2014) on Aug. 29.
