Steve Jackson Games (SJG) has issued a pre-release edition of a sourcebook and RPG inspired by Girl Genius, the popular gaslamp fantasy comic series from Phil and Kaja Foglio.
Currently available as a 196-page PDF, it’s described as a “complete roleplaying game covering character creation, equipment, combat, and dramatic situations and tasks – including inventing, of course.”
The sourcebook, illustrated by the Foglios, also includes descriptions of the setting, history, and major characters, plus game stats and advice for running and playing the game.
The RPG is compatible with the fourth edition of SJG’s GURPS (Generic Universal RolePlaying System), but the company says it’s a self-contained game and GURPS is not required to play.
SJG released the PDF in advance of a Kickstarter campaign for a possible hardcover edition. There’s no word yet on when the Kickstarter will launch.
The company originally announced plans to develop a Girl Genius RPG in 2005, but the project languished for years.
“I can say that the long-promised Girl Genius GURPS rulebook is finally ready,” Phil Foglio stated on Twitter, adding that “we’re pretty pleased about it.”
The Foglios have also illustrated other games for the publisher, and in 2019, SJG released a Girl Genius expansion for its Munchkin Steampunk card game.
DriveThru Comics and Warehouse 23 both offer a free downloadable 22-page preview with a table of contents and index. The preview and full PDF both include links to a private preview of the Kickstarter campaign.
The Kickstarter campaign will include an 8-page Girl Genius comic as a stretch goal. If that goal is unlocked, the company says, pre-release customers will get updated PDFs at no extra charge.
