Steam Powered Giraffe Schedules First Post-Pandemic Live Concert

Thursday, June 29, 2023

Steam Powered Giraffe is headed back to the stage for the first time since the start of the pandemic. They’ll perform live and in-person on Friday, Jan. 26, 2024 at The Center Theater at California Center for the Arts in Escondido, California.

Writing on Facebook, bandmember David Michael Bennett (aka “The Spine”) characterized the show as the first step in a return to live performance. However, the band is not yet accepting bookings and no other concerts are currently scheduled.

“We will hold a few local shows ourselves around San Diego to get our feet wet,” he explained. “Our entire live show is being rebuilt from the ground up since the pandemic. Once we get our local show setup down and we feel the time is right we will expand our setup to do shows we travel/fly out to and begin booking venues and events again.” He did not offer a timetable.

The Escondido concert will feature the three core members – the robots Rabbit, Zer0, and The Spine – plus the “Walter Workers” Chelsea and Camille as well as G.G. the Giraffe and a sound technician, but no backing musicians.

“It’s enough work to get everything up and running without bringing in more new people for the first show back,” Bennett explained.

The band says the concert will not be filmed, and they are not permitting video recording or photography. However, they are planning a live-stream show late this year.

Tickets cost $35 for regular admission and $70 for premium admission, which gets you closer to the stage. The venue has about 400 seats.

You can order tickets from the art center website.

Meanwhile, the band has successfully funded a vinyl pressing of their 2013 album MK III. As we reported, they ran what was essentially a crowdfunding campaign for the double-LP edition via Bandcamp. They estimate delivery in November. The campaign runs through the end of June. See the funding page for more info.
