Better late than never, as they say. After a long wait, we’re back with a new episode of The World of Steampunk, our periodic video series. Episode 10 is all about steampunk events.
First, we visit Clockwork Alchemy, the San Francisco-area steampunk convention, treating viewers to scenes from the fashion show, Artists Gallery, War Room, and concerts on Friday and Saturday night.
Then we have Q&As with two event organizers: Evan Narlinger of Steampunk Adventurers Weekend in South Florida and Justin Katz of The Edwardian Ball in San Francisco. Both segments are augmented by photos and video clips from the events.
Narlinger, who has spent his career in event production, caught the steampunk bug in 2017 and launched Steampunk Adventurers Weekend in 2022. He took us on a tour of the festival’s attractions as well as the venue, a history park on the South Florida Fairgrounds.
Katz discussed the origins of The Edwardian Ball, along with recent changes at the event and its connection to steampunk culture.
Where’s the News?
When we launched the series in August 2022, we hoped to produce it on a monthly or bimonthly basis, and each episode began with a five- to six-minute newscast. But for a variety of reasons, including the time it takes to produce each episode, the series has been more sporadic than we originally intended.
That’s especially true this year, as we’ve been working on a redesign of the website, plus we’ve had to take on additional freelance writing work to keep a roof over our heads.
Given the reduced frequency, the newscast no longer makes sense. We’ll continue to produce The World of Steampunk when we find the time, but episodes will consist entirely of feature content. Then, later this year, we plan to launch a short standalone newscast that will run more frequently.
