International Steampunk Day Is June 14; Here’s How to Celebrate

Tuesday, June 13, 2023

June 14 is (almost) here, which means it’s time once again to celebrate International Steampunk Day. As we reported last year, the date has no particular historical significance – it was conceived in 2008 by a college student named Drew Mierzejewski, who hosted what he now describes as a “very low-key steampunk party.” He chose June 14 because it was the end of the semester, making it the earliest day his friends could meet.

But it has grown from that humble beginning, offering a great excuse for steampunk fans worldwide to host events, watch movies, play games, read books (or comics), listen to music, and otherwise “bask in the glory that is the steampunk genre,” as Mierzejewski explained.

If you can wait until the weekend, you can celebrate in good company at events such as the International Steampunk Symposium in Cincinnati; Brass Screw Consortium festival in Port Townsend, Washington; Hangtown Wild West & Steampunk Festival in Northern California; Thaaar Be Pirates Booty at the Old New-Gate Prison in Connecticut, and the monthly Boston Steampunk Gathering.

Looking for more ideas? You can support creators in the community by purchasing a book or patronizing music artists. Or consider supporting one of these current Kickstarter campaigns:

Antique de la Mode – Victorian style playing cards by Laura Meyer.

Dragon Latitudes – A steampunk fantasy adventure by Amy Campbell.

The Periwinkle Perspective: The Poisoned Chalice – A Periwinkle Perspective comic book from Paul Eccentric.

Pneumatic Cases Vol. 1 – A graphic novel trade paperback from Last Ember Press.

The Town of Ground-Down Gears – A story collection from Danielle Ackley-McPhail.

The Waves Files – A new Guitarmy of One solo album by Scott Helland of Frenchy and the Punk.

The World of Kedor – A steampunk-themed RPG by Nerdcastle.

Of course, here at The Steampunk Explorer, we celebrate the genre and subculture every day of the year. If you want to assist our efforts to bring you steampunk news, event listings, and other resources, you can always support us on Patreon or tip the editor.
