Deadline reported that The Daughter of Doctor Moreau, the acclaimed 2022 novel by Silvia Moreno-Garcia, is being developed for television by producer Debra Moore Muñoz.
The Hugo-nominated tale is a reimagining of H.G. Wells’ The Island of Doctor Moreau. It moves the setting to Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula in the 19th century, where young Carlota Moreau lives with her mad scientist father and his human-animal hybrids.
In a post on Bluesky, the author cautioned that being “in development” does not guarantee that the show will go into production.
She noted that an earlier novel, Mexican Gothic, was once optioned for TV “and nothing came of it. But it’s always nice when someone takes an interest in your work. And who knows, maybe this one will make it to the screen.”
Moreno-Garcia is an executive producer for the show along with Moore Muñoz and several others, Deadline reported. Moore Muñoz was previously a writer and co-executive producer for Mayans M.C., a series on FX.
The author is slated to appear at Emerald City Comicon, which takes place March 6-9 in Seattle. She will also be a Guest of Honor at the 46th International Conference for the Fantastic in the Arts, March 19-22 in Orlando, and Balticon, May 23-26 in Baltimore. Learn more on her website.
