Once again, geeks of every stripe, including steampunk fans, will converge on Atlanta for Dragon Con, the huge multi-genre fan convention that takes place over Labor Day weekend. We have a preview.

Billed as the largest steampunk gathering on the planet, the festival takes place this weekend in Lincoln, U.K. The organizer describes it as a “convention style event” with daytime programming plus concerts, a Saturday night ball, and more.

GalaxyCon came to San Jose with an impressive lineup of celebrities, including cast members from Star Trek, Psych, and Our Flag Means Death. But for me, the main attraction was the opportunity to meet artists, writers, and cosplayers.

One major attraction of any steampunk event is the cosplay, and so it was at the Key City Steampunk Convention. Attendees demonstrated their creativity in a fashion show and costume contest, as well as random encounters throughout the convention.

The Key City Steampunk Convention took place Aug. 9-11 in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, featuring a Who’s Who of steampunk makers plus the first-ever U.S. appearance by British electro-swing performer Madam Misfit. The Steampunk Explorer was also there.

Whitby Steampunk Weekend returned July 26-28 to the North Yorkshire coast. For many attendees, the main attraction was an opportunity to congregate with costumed steampunks in a scenic seaside town.

Madam Misfit will make her first-ever U.S. appearance at the convention, joining Victor and The Bully and a host of other steampunk luminaries. The Steampunk Explorer will also be there.

The 10th Annual Obtainium Cup Contraptor’s Rally took place Sunday, July 28 at the Mare Island Art Studios in Vallejo, California, drawing art cars and other “sculptural vehicles” that navigated a madcap obstacle course.
Entertainment
The highly anticipated second season of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power arrives at the end of August on Prime Video, and to set the stage, the streamer will offer Peter Jackson’s complete Middle-earth film franchise: The three Lord of the Rings films plus the three-part Hobbit saga.

Last year’s Comic-Con International took place during the Hollywood actors strike, putting a crimp on an event known as a showcase for new movies and TV series. Now the convention is back, though it will be light on steampunk programming.

A bit sooner than expected, Frenchy and the Punk are out with their eighth album, Midnight Garden, just two months after concluding a successful Kickstarter campaign for the release.
Observances
July 10 is Nikola Tesla Day, commemorating the birthday of the visionary inventor and engineer who has become a patron saint of steampunk. Because it falls on a Wednesday, some celebrations are happening the following weekend.
Music
The new release, Ghosts, Demons and Ancient Lore, will be accompanied by a story collection. It’s the first time the band has used Kickstarter to fund a studio album.
Entertainment
Mortal Engines was a disappointment to many steampunk fans, but it had great visuals despite its flaws, and this month it moves from Netflix to a new streaming home on Hulu. Other notable arrivals include Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events on both Paramount+ and Prime Video.

The musical robots of Steam Powered Giraffe have a new album in the works. Nine years ago, they produced tunes for the video game SteamWorld Heist, and in August they’re set to release music for the sequel.

The day offers a great excuse to throw a party, or even better, to go out on the town with your steampunk friends and see the reactions from puzzled onlookers.

The city of Weed in Northern California hosted its free annual steampunk festival May 18 and 19, featuring music, artisan vendors, costumes, and a rat rod car show. The city is best known for its unusual name and its proximity to Mount Shasta.

Victor and the Bully has welcomed guitarist Frankie Doom, which led in a roundabout way to a new music video filmed at the historic Crossness Pumping Station in London.

Steampunk fans will stage a friendly invasion of downtown Bloomington, Illinois, as Cogs & Corsets returns this weekend. Other highlights include events in Omaha, Des Moines, and North West England.

Thousands of anime enthusiasts gathered in San Jose over Memorial Day weekend for the 30th anniversary edition of this convention “by fans, for fans.” It mostly took place at the San Jose Convention Center, but also spilled over to nearby hotels.
