Once again, geeks of every stripe, including steampunk fans, will converge on Atlanta for Dragon Con, the huge multi-genre fan convention that takes place over Labor Day weekend. We have a preview.
Billed as the largest steampunk gathering on the planet, the festival takes place this weekend in Lincoln, U.K. The organizer describes it as a “convention style event” with daytime programming plus concerts, a Saturday night ball, and more.
GalaxyCon came to San Jose with an impressive lineup of celebrities, including cast members from Star Trek, Psych, and Our Flag Means Death. But for me, the main attraction was the opportunity to meet artists, writers, and cosplayers.
One major attraction of any steampunk event is the cosplay, and so it was at the Key City Steampunk Convention. Attendees demonstrated their creativity in a fashion show and costume contest, as well as random encounters throughout the convention.
The Key City Steampunk Convention took place Aug. 9-11 in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, featuring a Who’s Who of steampunk makers plus the first-ever U.S. appearance by British electro-swing performer Madam Misfit. The Steampunk Explorer was also there.
Whitby Steampunk Weekend returned July 26-28 to the North Yorkshire coast. For many attendees, the main attraction was an opportunity to congregate with costumed steampunks in a scenic seaside town.
Madam Misfit will make her first-ever U.S. appearance at the convention, joining Victor and The Bully and a host of other steampunk luminaries. The Steampunk Explorer will also be there.
The 10th Annual Obtainium Cup Contraptor’s Rally took place Sunday, July 28 at the Mare Island Art Studios in Vallejo, California, drawing art cars and other “sculptural vehicles” that navigated a madcap obstacle course.
The highly anticipated second season of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power arrives at the end of August on Prime Video, and to set the stage, the streamer will offer Peter Jackson’s complete Middle-earth film franchise: The three Lord of the Rings films plus the three-part Hobbit saga.
