Steampunk Event Changes Due to COVID-19 Outbreak
Here is a list of steampunk-related events cancelled or postponed due to the COVID-19 outbreak. We’ll keep the list updated as we learn of additional changes.
221B Con, a convention for “all things Sherlock Holmes” in Atlanta, was postponed until next year. It was originally set for April 3-5.
A Splendid Day Out, scheduled for May 29-31 in Lancaster, UK, was cancelled.
Auriferra Republic, a new steampunk event scheduled for May 8-9 in San Francisco, was postponed to a date to be determined.
Balticon, scheduled for May 22-25 in Baltimore, was cancelled.
BayCon, the San Francisco-area science fiction convention, was postponed to Nov. 6-8. It was originally scheduled for Memorial Day Weekend. This year’s event is held concurrently with the STARFLEET International Conference, which has also moved to Nov. 6-8. See the website for details.
Bridlington Race The Waves & Steampunk Weekend, scheduled for May 8-10 in Bridlington, UK, was cancelled.
C.O.G.S. Expo, scheduled for May 15-17 in Iselin, New Jersey, was rescheduled to Oct. 16-18. The organizers are planning a streaming version of the convention for the original dates of May 15-17. They made the announcement on Twitter and Instagram.
Clockwork Alchemy, originally scheduled for March 20-22 in Burlingame, California, was postponed until March 19-21, 2021. This year’s theme of “Marvelous Makers” will be rolled over to next year. Here is the announcement.
Cogs & Corsets: A Steampunk Happening, scheduled for June 5-7 in Bloomington, Illinois, was cancelled.
Costume-Con 38, scheduled for March 13-16 in Montreal, was cancelled.
Festival of Steam and Transport, scheduled for April 12-13 in Chatham, Kent, UK, was cancelled.
Fort Town Steampunk Festival, scheduled for May 2 in Prescott, Ontario, was postponed to Sept. 26.
The Freaky Mutant Weirdo Variety Show, scheduled for March 21 at Roxy & Dukes Roadhouse in Dunellen, New Jersey, was postponed until further notice.
Hereford Steampunk Weekend, scheduled for April 25-26 at the Waterworks Museum in Hereford, UK, was cancelled. The museum cancelled all events for March and April.
The International Conference on the Fantastic in the Arts, scheduled for March 18-21 in Orlando, was cancelled. The guest of honor was to be Jeff VanderMeer, author of The Steampunk Bible.
The International Steampunk Symposium, originally scheduled for March 27-29, will be held August 28-30 at the Holiday Inn Eastgate in Cincinnati with the same “Weird West” theme. Read the announcement.
Leeds Steampunk Market, scheduled for May 2-3 at the Leeds Industrial Museum in Leeds, UK, was cancelled.
Llandudno Victorian Extravaganza, scheduled for May 8-10 in Llandudno, Wales, was cancelled.
MCM Comic Con in Birmingham, UK, was postponed from March 21-22 to June 27-28. Past events have included steampunk programming.
Megacon Orlando, scheduled for April 16-19, was postponed to June 4-7.
The New Jersey Renaissance Faire, scheduled for May 23-June 7, was cancelled for this year.
The Northern California Pirate Festival, scheduled for June 20-21 in Vallejo, California, was cancelled on March 10 due to the coronavirus outbreak as well as AB5, a new law in California that restricts use of independent contractors. That event draws a large number of steampunk enthusiasts from the San Francisco Bay Area and Sacramento.
Norwescon 43, scheduled for April 9-12 near Seattle, was cancelled. The science fiction and fantasy convention hosts the Philip K. Dick Award.
Phoenix Fan Fusion, scheduled for May 21-24, was rescheduled to Sept. 25-27. Previously known as Phoenix Comicon and Phoenix Comic Fest, it’s one of the larger geek culture conventions in the USA. See the website for details.
Pirate Fest Las Vegas, scheduled for April 10-12, was postponed until 2021.
The Port Townsend Victorian Heritage Festival, scheduled for March 20-22 in Port Townsend, Washington, was cancelled. The organizers say it will be back next year for its 25th anniversary.
Portsmouth Comic Con, scheduled for May 2-3 in Portsmouth, UK, was postponed to Aug. 15-16.
Ratha Con, scheduled for April 18 in Athens, Ohio, was postponed to Oct. 17.
Renaissance Pleasure Faire, scheduled for April and May in Southern California, was cancelled. The organizers initially delayed the start from April 4 to April 18.
SFWA Nebula Conference, scheduled for May 28-31 in Woodland Hills, California, will become a virtual conference running May 29-31. The Nebula Awards honoring the year’s best speculative fiction will be presented via live stream on May 30 at 8 p.m. Eastern time. See the website for details.
The Shrewsbury Steampunk Spectacular, scheduled for March 21, 2020 in Shrewsbury, UK, was postponed to March 27, 2021. However, a separate ticketed event on the evening of March 21 was scheduled to go forward.
The Spring Steam Show in Brownsville, Pennsylvania, was cancelled. The summer show is still scheduled for Aug. 7-9. The event features demonstrations of steam-powered vehicles and equipment. It’s presented by the National Pike Steam Gas, and Horse Association. The location is near Pittsburgh. See the website for details.
Steam Railfest, scheduled for April 25-26 in Fillmore, California, was cancelled.
Steampunk Filey, scheduled for May 16-17 in Filey, UK, was postponed until 2021.
The Steampunk Masquerade at the Fitchburg Art Museum in Massachusetts was postponed from March 14 to later this fall.
Steampunk NZ, scheduled for May 28-June 1 in Oamaru, New Zealand, was postponed until June 3-7, 2021. This year's planned "Adventures in Astronomy" theme will roll over to next year.
Steampunk Symposium organizer Allen Chung announced that he won’t be doing an event this year. The previous two events have been held in November in Central Pennsylvania. That’s also the site of the Key City Steampunk Festival, now scheduled for Aug. 14-16 in Gettysburg. “I don’t think there is room for two events in the same general region especially in an economic downturn,” he says. “I’m going to encourage people to attend the Key City event.”
Steamship Landing Exposition, scheduled for June 13-14 in Plattsmouth, Nebraska, has been postponed. The organizers say they will announce a new date “as soon as we are able.” See the website for more info.
StokerCon, the annual convention of the Horror Writers Association, has been tentatively rescheduled for Aug. 6-9. It was slated for April 16-19 in Scarborough, UK. The Bram Stoker Awards honoring superior achievement in horror writing will be presented in a virtual ceremony on April 18. See the StokerCon and Horror Writers Association websites for more info.
Venice is Sinking Masquerade Ball, originally scheduled for March 28 in Seattle, was postponed to June 7. Here is the Eventbrite page.
Virginia Renaissance Faire, scheduled for May 9-June 7 in Spotsylvania, was cancelled for this year.
The Watch City Steampunk Festival, scheduled for May 9 in Waltham, Massachusetts, has been cancelled for this year. The organizers plan to return May 8, 2021. See the website for details.
Whitby Goth Weekend, scheduled for April 24-26 in Whitby, UK, was cancelled. A second Whitby Goth Weekend is still slated for Oct. 30-Nov 1. The event draws a lot of steampunk enthusiasts.
Wings Falls Steamposium in Glen Falls, New York, scheduled for April 17-19, was cancelled. The main venue, the Charlie Wood Theater, has cancelled all events through mid-April.
WhedonCon, slated for June 5-7 in Los Angeles, has been rescheduled to Oct. 30-Nov. 1. The convention is for fans of entertainment created by Joss Whedon, including Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Firefly, Dollhouse, and Agents of SHIELD. It may also have programming related to The Nevers, Whedon’s forthcoming HBO science fiction series set during the Victorian era. See the website for more info.
WisCon, scheduled for May 22-25 in Madison, Wisconsin, was cancelled.
WonderCon, scheduled for April 10-12 in Anaheim, California, was postponed until a later date.
