Steampunk Event Changes Due to COVID-19 Outbreak
Here is a list of steampunk-related events cancelled or postponed due to the COVID-19 outbreak. We’ll keep the list updated as we learn of additional changes.
New: We now have a listing of steampunk-related online events. Some of these are replacements for in-person events.
221B Con, a convention for “all things Sherlock Holmes” in Atlanta, was postponed until next year. It was originally set for April 3-5.
A Splendid Day Out, scheduled for May 29-31 in Lancaster, UK, was cancelled.
The Asylum Steampunk Festival, scheduled for Aug. 28-31 in Lincoln, UK, was cancelled for 2020.
Auriferra Republic, a new steampunk event scheduled for May 8-9 in San Francisco, was postponed to a date to be determined.
Balticon, scheduled for May 22-25 in Baltimore, was cancelled.
BayCon, the San Francisco-area science fiction convention, was postponed to Nov. 6-8. It was originally scheduled for Memorial Day Weekend. This year’s event is held concurrently with the STARFLEET International Conference, which has also moved to Nov. 6-8. See the website for details.
The Beer-Lesque & Carniv-Ale Show, set for May 9 in St. Thomas, Ontario, was rescheduled to August 29.
Boconnoc Steam Fair, scheduled for July 24-26 in Lostwithiel, UK, was cancelled. The event features demonstrations of steam-powered vehicles and equipment.
The Brass Screw Confederacy Steampunk Festival, scheduled for June 12-14 in Port Townsend, Washington, was cancelled for 2020. In its place, the organizers will host the “Ineluctable, Ultra-Telegraphic Virtual Screw” on June 13. Tickets to the online event cost $15.
Bressingham Steampunk Weekend, scheduled for July 4-5 at Bressingham Steam & Gardens in Norfolk, UK, was postponed to Aug. 29-30. See the website for updates.
Bridlington Race The Waves & Steampunk Weekend, scheduled for May 8-10 in Bridlington, UK, was cancelled.
Clockwork Alchemy, originally scheduled for March 20-22 in Burlingame, California, was postponed until March 19-21, 2021. This year’s theme of “Marvelous Makers” will be rolled over to next year. Here is the announcement.
Cog County Faire in Montello, Wisconsin, has been rescheduled to Oct. 15-18. It was slated for May 28-31 at the White Lake Beach Resort.
Cogs & Corsets: A Steampunk Happening, scheduled for June 5-7 in Bloomington, Illinois, was cancelled.
C.O.G.S. Expo, scheduled for May 15-17 in Iselin, New Jersey, was rescheduled to Oct. 16-18. The organizers are planning a streaming version of the convention for the original dates of May 15-17. They made the announcement on Twitter and Instagram.
ConCarolinas, scheduled for May 29-30 in Charlotte, North Carolina, was cancelled. Scheduled guests included steampunk author Maurice Broaddus. The organizers are planning a virtual event in its place. See the website for more info.
Costume College, scheduled for July 30-Aug. 3 in Woodland Hills, California, was cancelled for 2020. Next year's event will be held in late July or early August in the same location. The conference, which features costuming arts instruction, is produced by the Costumer’s Guild West, Inc. See the website for more info.
Costume-Con 38, scheduled for March 13-16 in Montreal, was cancelled.
Danish Brotherhood/Steampunk General Store Steampunk Minicon, set for May 23 in Kenosha, Wisconsin, was postponed until Sept. 12. See the Facebook page for info.
Doncaster Steampunk Weekend, scheduled for May 30-31 in South Yorkshire, UK, was cancelled.
FanimeCon, a large anime convention in San Jose, was cancelled for 2020. It was scheduled for Memorial Day Weekend. Until 2018, the event was held concurrently with Clockwork Alchemy, the Bay Area steampunk convention.
Festival of Steam and Transport, scheduled for April 12-13 in Chatham, Kent, UK, was cancelled.
Fort Town Steampunk Festival, scheduled for May 2 in Prescott, Ontario, was postponed to Sept. 26.
The Freaky Mutant Weirdo Variety Show, scheduled for March 21 at Roxy & Dukes Roadhouse in Dunellen, New Jersey, was postponed until further notice.
The Georgia Renaissance Festival near Atlanta was postponed to Oct. 10-Nov. 22. It was originally set to open April 18, then the opening was moved to May 2. See the website for more info.
Hebden Bridge Steampunk Weekend, scheduled for Aug. 1 and 2 in West Yorkshire, UK, was cancelled.
Hereford Steampunk Weekend, scheduled for April 25-26 at the Waterworks Museum in Hereford, UK, was cancelled. The museum cancelled all events for March and April.
The Idyllwild Western Steampunk Symposium, scheduled for June 14 in Idyllwild, California, is "on hold due to COVID-19."
The International Conference on the Fantastic in the Arts, scheduled for March 18-21 in Orlando, was cancelled. The guest of honor was to be Jeff VanderMeer, author of The Steampunk Bible.
The International Discworld Convention, scheduled for Aug. 7-10 in Birmingham, UK, was postponed until 2022.
The International Steampunk Symposium was cancelled for 2020. It was originally scheduled for March 27-29, and then postponed to August 28-30. Read the announcement.
Kraken Watch, scheduled for May 1-3 at the Quileute Oceanside Resort in La Push, Washington, was postponed. The organizers have not announced a new date. See the Facebook event page for more info.
Leeds Steampunk Market, scheduled for May 2-3 at the Leeds Industrial Museum in Leeds, UK, was cancelled.
Leeds Steampunk Market, scheduled for July 4-5 at the Middleton Railway in Leeds, UK, was cancelled.
Llandudno Victorian Extravaganza, scheduled for May 8-10 in Llandudno, Wales, was cancelled.
Lodi Steampunk Garden Party, scheduled for June 20 in Lodi, Wisconsin, was cancelled.
MCM Comic Cons in the UK were all cancelled for this year. They included events in Birmingham, London, Manchester, and Glasgow.
MegaCon Orlando has been cancelled for 2020. The organizers are planning a smaller event, Megacon Orlando Limited Edition, on Halloween weekend, Oct. 30-Nov. 1. It will be limited to 25,000 tickets. The pop culture convention was originally scheduled for April 16-19, but on March 23, the organizers announced that it would be postponed to June 4-7. See the website for more info.
Michigan Steam Expo, scheduled for June 26 - 28 in Pontiac, Michigan, was cancelled.
Monocles and Mischief, a steampunk event scheduled for July 25 in Indianapolis, has apparently been cancelled. The website and Facebook page are no longer active.
The New Jersey Renaissance Faire, scheduled for May 23-June 7, was cancelled for this year.
The Northern California Pirate Festival, scheduled for June 20-21 in Vallejo, California, was cancelled on March 10 due to the coronavirus outbreak as well as AB5, a new law in California that restricts use of independent contractors. That event draws a large number of steampunk enthusiasts from the San Francisco Bay Area and Sacramento.
Norwescon 43, scheduled for April 9-12 near Seattle, was cancelled. The science fiction and fantasy convention hosts the Philip K. Dick Award.
Ocean Renaissance: Merfolk Pirate Faerie SteamPunk Convention in Ocean City, Maryland, was postponed until 2021. It was scheduled for June 12-14.
The Old Timers Day Steampunk Festival, scheduled for May 16-17 in Van Buren, Arkansas, was cancelled.
Phoenix Fan Fusion, scheduled for May 21-24, was rescheduled to Sept. 25-27. Previously known as Phoenix Comicon and Phoenix Comic Fest, it’s one of the larger geek culture conventions in the USA. See the website for details.
Pirate Fest Las Vegas, scheduled for April 10-12, was postponed until 2021.
The Port Townsend Victorian Heritage Festival, scheduled for March 20-22 in Port Townsend, Washington, was cancelled. The organizers say it will be back next year for its 25th anniversary.
Portsmouth Comic Con, scheduled for May 2-3 in Portsmouth, UK, was cancelled.
The Raising Steam Festival 2.0, scheduled for May 8-10 in Bromsgrove, UK, was cancelled as an in-person event. The organizer is planning a free virtual event in its place, with music, traders, and more. Details are still being worked out. See the Facebook page for updates.
Ratha Con, scheduled for April 18 in Athens, Ohio, was postponed to Oct. 17.
Renaissance Pleasure Faire, scheduled for April and May in Southern California, was cancelled. The organizers initially delayed the start from April 4 to April 18.
RetroFutureFest, scheduled for July 12-18 in Easton, Pennsylvania, was cancelled.
San Diego Comic Con, scheduled for July 23-26, was cancelled for 2020.
SFWA Nebula Conference, scheduled for May 28-31 in Woodland Hills, California, will become a virtual conference running May 29-31. The Nebula Awards honoring the year’s best speculative fiction will be presented via live stream on May 30 at 8 p.m. Eastern time. See the website for details.
The Shrewsbury Steampunk Spectacular, scheduled for March 21, 2020 in Shrewsbury, UK, was postponed to March 27, 2021. However, a separate ticketed event on the evening of March 21 was scheduled to go forward.
The Silk City Steampunk Festival, scheduled for July 25 in Manchester, New Hampshire, was cancelled.
The Spring Steam Show in Brownsville, Pennsylvania, was cancelled. The summer show is still scheduled for Aug. 7-9. The event features demonstrations of steam-powered vehicles and equipment. It’s presented by the National Pike Steam Gas, and Horse Association. The location is near Pittsburgh. See the website for details.
Steam Railfest, scheduled for April 25-26 in Fillmore, California, was cancelled.
Steampunk Days at Cowtown Saloon, scheduled for May 16-17 at the Old Cowtown Museum in Wichita, was postponed until a later date.
The Steampunk Fair in Dexter, Maine has been rescheduled. Originally set for July 10-12, it will now take place Oct. 16-18. See the Facebook page for more info.
Steampunk Filey, scheduled for May 16-17 in Filey, UK, was postponed until 2021.
The Steampunk Masquerade at the Fitchburg Art Museum in Massachusetts was postponed from March 14 to later this fall.
Steampunk NZ, scheduled for May 28-June 1 in Oamaru, New Zealand, was postponed until June 3-7, 2021. This year's planned "Adventures in Astronomy" theme will roll over to next year.
Steampunk Symposium organizer Allen Chung announced that he won’t be doing an event this year. The previous two events have been held in November in Central Pennsylvania. That’s also the site of the Key City Steampunk Festival, now scheduled for Aug. 14-16 in Gettysburg. “I don’t think there is room for two events in the same general region especially in an economic downturn,” he says. “I’m going to encourage people to attend the Key City event.”
The Steampunk Tea and Bazaar, scheduled for June 13 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, was postponed until 2021. The Society for the Ethical Treatment of Kraken, which sponsors the gathering, will host an online event in its place. See the Facebook page for details.
Steampunks Beside The Seaside, slated for May 3 in Scarborough, UK, was cancelled. The event is produced by the organization behind Whitby Steampunk Weekend, which is still on for July 24-26 at the Whitby Pavilion in North Yorkshire.
Steamship Landing Exposition, scheduled for June 13-14 in Plattsmouth, Nebraska, has been postponed. The organizers say they will announce a new date “as soon as we are able.” See the website for more info.
StokerCon, the annual convention of the Horror Writers Association, has been tentatively rescheduled for Aug. 6-9. It was slated for April 16-19 in Scarborough, UK. The Bram Stoker Awards honoring superior achievement in horror writing will be presented in a virtual ceremony on April 18. See the StokerCon and Horror Writers Association websites for more info.
Stroud Steampunk Weekend, scheduled for May 22-23 in Stroud, Gloucestershire, UK, was postponed. “We will be back when the madness is over,” the organizers say. Scheduled performers included Professor Elemental, Victor Sierra, and Frenchy and The Punk.
TeslaCon, scheduled for Nov. 5-8 near Madison, Wisconsin, was cancelled. A virtual event will be held in its place.
Venice is Sinking Masquerade Ball in Seattle was cancelled. It was originally scheduled for March 28, and then postponed to June 7.
Virginia Renaissance Faire, scheduled for May 9-June 7 in Spotsylvania, was cancelled for this year.
The Watch City Steampunk Festival, scheduled for May 9 in Waltham, Massachusetts, has been cancelled for this year. The organizers plan to return May 8, 2021. See the website for details.
Westercons 73 and 74 were each postponed one year. Westercon 73, scheduled for July 2-5 in SeaTac, Washington, will be held July 1-4, 2021 at the same location. Westercon 74, set for July 1-4, 2021 in Tonopah, Nevada, will be held July 1-4, 2022 in Tonopah. The event, formally known as the West Coast Science Fantasy Conference, rotates among different cities in the Western U.S. each year.
Whitby Goth Weekend, scheduled for April 24-26 in Whitby, UK, was cancelled. A second Whitby Goth Weekend is still slated for Oct. 30-Nov 1. The event draws a lot of steampunk enthusiasts.
Wigan Steampunk, scheduled for Sept. 19 in Wigan, UK (near Manchester) was cancelled.
Wings Falls Steamposium in Glen Falls, New York, scheduled for April 17-19, was cancelled. The main venue, the Charlie Wood Theater, has cancelled all events through mid-April.
WhedonCon was cancelled. It was originally slated for June 5-7 in Los Angeles and then rescheduled to Oct. 30-Nov. 1. The organizers are planning a virtual event. The convention is for fans of entertainment created by Joss Whedon, including Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Firefly, Dollhouse, and Agents of SHIELD. It may also have programming related to The Nevers, Whedon’s forthcoming HBO science fiction series set during the Victorian era. See the website for more info.
Whitby Steampunk Weekend, scheduled for July 24-26 at the Whitby Pavilion in North Yorkshire, UK, was cancelled for 2020.
WisCon, scheduled for May 22-25 in Madison, Wisconsin, was cancelled.
WonderCon, scheduled for April 10-12 in Anaheim, California, was postponed until a later date.
The 78th World Science Fiction Convention aka CoNZealand, will be a virtual convention this year. It was scheduled for July 29-Aug. 2 in Wellington, New Zealand. The program includes presentation of the 2020 Hugo Awards. See the website for more info.
