Howard University is a federally chartered, private, coeducational, nonsectarian, historically black university in Washington, D.C. In addition to the undergraduate program, Howard has graduate schools of business, pharmacy, law, social work, medicine, dentistry, and divinity. Total enrollment is about 10,300.

Notable alumni include author/poet Amiri Baraka; author Ta-Nehisi Coates; actor Ossie Davis; and actresses Taraji P. Henson, Lynn Whitfield and Phylicia Rashad.
