Nevada County Historical Society
The society operates four museums in California's Sierra Nevada foothills near Sacramento. It's headquartered in the Searls Historical Library, which includes more than 22,000 historical photographs as well as printed books, maps and various historic documents. The Nevada County Narrow Gauge Railroad Museum includes a restoration shop and an 1875 Baldwin steam locomotive. The Firehouse No. 1 Museum has four exhibit areas covering late 1800s and early 1900s, including items from the infamous Donner Party journey. The North Star Mining Museum includes a 30-foot Pelton wheel, stamp mill, dynamite packer, Cornish water pump and other mining equipment.
