The University of California, Davis (also referred to as UCD, UC Davis, or Davis), is a public research university and one of the 10 campuses of the University of California system. Located just west of Sacramento, it encompasses 7,309 acres of land, making it the largest UC campus in terms of land ownership.
Among other honors, university faculty, alumni, and researchers have won the Nobel Peace Prize, Presidential Medal of Freedom, Pulitzer Prize, MacArthur Fellowship, National Medal of Science, Blue Planet Prize, and Presidential Early Career Award in Science and Engineering.
The university has expanded over the past century to include graduate and professional programs in medicine, law, veterinary medicine, education, nursing, and business management, in addition to 90 research programs offered by UC Davis Graduate Studies.
Notable alumni include actor Michael Gaston and science-fiction authors Karen Joy Fowler and James Van Pelt.
UC Davis' libraries include the Peter J. Shields Library, the Physical Sciences & Engineering Library, the Carlson Health Sciences Library, and the Medical Center Library in Sacramento. They contain more than 3.5 million volumes and offers a number of special collections and services. The libraries are open to the public, and you can access many online resources from computers within the libraries. Free library cards are available for California public school employees, California college faculty and librarians, and UC alumni association members. Other California residents can obtain a library card for $60 per year.
