The Civil War Museum of Philadelphia claims to be the oldest chartered American Civil War institution in the United States. The museum was founded in 1888 by veteran officers of the Union Army, Navy and Marine Corps. As of March 2016, the museum is closed to the public. While closed, its collection is being stored at the Gettysburg Museum and Visitor Center, where an exhibition of material from the collection was planned for 2013. Artifacts are also on exhibit at the National Museum of American Jewish History in Philadelphia and the African American Museum in Philadelphia.
