University of Minnesota
The University of Minnesota Twin Cities is a public research university located in Minneapolis and St. Paul. The Minneapolis and St. Paul campuses are approximately 3 miles apart. The Saint Paul campus is actually in neighboring Falcon Heights. It is the oldest and largest campus within the University of Minnesota system and has the sixth-largest main campus student body in the United States, with 51,147 students in 2013–14. The university is organized into 19 colleges and schools.
Notable alumni include science fiction authors Poul Anderson and Gordon R. Dickson; Dungeons & Dragons co-creator Dave Arneson; Pixar screenwriter/director Peter Docter; author/satirist Garrison Keillor; Star Trek actress Kate Mulgrew; and actors Henry Fonda, Peter Graves, E.G. Marshall, Ron Perlman, and Robert Vaughn.
Libraries: The university libraries contain a total of 7.5 million volumes. The main Twin Cities libraries are the Magrath Library on the St. Paul campus and the Wilson Library on the Minneapolis campus. Members of the public may use materials within the libraries. Visitors may register for computer workstation cards that allow access to designated computers for up to two hours per day. The university has reciprocal borrowing arrangements with other state universities in Minnesota and other Big Ten institutions. Others may obtain borrowing privileges and unlimited computer access by joining Friends of the Libraries. The cost is $40 per year for alumni and $80 per year for others.
