Rice University

6100 Main St., Houston, TX 77251

Rice University is a private research university in Houston with an undergraduate focus. It has a small student body and 6:1 student-faculty ratio. The university has a high level of research activity for its size, with $115.3 million in sponsored research funding in 2011. Rice is noted for its applied science programs in the fields of artificial heart research, structural chemical analysis, signal processing, space science, and nanotechnology. It was ranked first in the world in materials science research by the Times Higher Education (THE) in 2010. The university has produced numerous prominent alumni, including more than two dozen Marshall Scholars and a dozen Rhodes Scholars. Given the university's close links to NASA, it has produced a disproportionate number of astronauts and space scientists.

Former students include filmmaker, aviation pioneer and reclusive billionaire Howard Hughes, whose life served as the basis for the 2004 film "The Aviator." Others include authors Larry McMurtry and Joyce Carol Oates.
