Brandeis University is an American private research university in Waltham, Massachusetts, 9 miles west of Boston. In 2015 it had a total enrollment of 5,532 students on its suburban campus spanning over 235 acres. The institution offers more than 43 majors and 46 minors. The university has a strong liberal arts focus. Notable alumni include "Star Trek" actress Gates McFadden ("Dr. Beverly Crusher"); New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman; technology writer Walter Mossberg; actor/director Tony Goldwyn; and actresses Tyne Daly and Louise Lasser.

Library: The Brandeis University Library manages more than 1,500,000 physical volumes, and more than 600,000 electronic books, as well as electronic journals and online databases. The library is open to the public. Borrowing privileges are extended to alumni, local clergy and individuals with Boston Library Consortium cards. The Boston Library Consortium includes 18 research/academic library systems in New England.
