Balticon is the Maryland Regional science fiction and fantasy convention, sponsored by the Baltimore Science Fiction Society (BSFS). During Balticon, BSFS presents the Compton Crook Award, given for the best first novel in the Science Fiction, Fantasy or Horror genre. The previous year's winner is invited back to present the award to the new winner.

BSFS also announces the winner of the annual Jack L. Chalker Young Writer's Contest, a short story writing contest for Maryland residents or school attendees between the ages of 14 and 18.

Beginning in 2013, the BSFS began presenting the Robert A. Heinlein Award, recognizing "outstanding published works in science fiction and technical writings to inspire the human exploration of space."

Guests of honor for 2020: Wen Spencer (Author), Lee Moyer (Artist), Cheshire Moon (Music). R. F. Kuang, winner of the 2019 Compton Crook Award, will present the 2020 award at Balticon.
