A Visit to Jekyll & Hyde

Robert Louis Stevenson’s tale inspired this steampunk-themed bar and grill near Charlotte

Thursday, April 18, 2019

Like its namesake characters, Jekyll & Hyde Taphouse and Grill in Matthews, North Carolina is a restaurant and bar with two personalities. Jekyll is the dining room, combining the feel of a traditional English pub with steampunk décor. It serves English and Irish dishes as well as American food.

Hyde, as you might expect, is the drinking establishment, with 50 craft beers on tap and custom craft cocktails. It has a more-pronounced steampunk look, including steampunk guitars on the walls. It “will greet you like a taproom from a Jules Verne novel,” says owner Frank La Fragola.

The bar and restaurant have separate entrances, but they’re connected by a library. Two outdoor patios are open when weather permits. The restaurant also offers catering.

The venture opened in January 2017.

Now La Fragola is planning a second location in Belmont, North Carolina with 12,000 square feet, nearly four times the size of the current space. It will have a similar concept, but with added features including a brewery, beer garden, and event space. It’s set to open in late summer in the location currently occupied by 10 Catawba and Bar 10.

Both towns are suburbs of Charlotte — Matthews is about 12 miles southeast of the city whereas Belmont is 12 miles west, near the Charlotte Douglas International Airport.

Needless to say, the new location promises to be another great hangout for steampunk enthusiasts in the area. La Fragola told us that he counts himself among that cohort.

He sent along some photos of the current location, which you can peruse in the gallery below. It’s located at 316 N. Trade Street, Matthews, NC 28105, phone (704) 846-HYDE (4933).
