Steampunks Head for Raleigh

Steampunk MidAtlantic to host makers, vendors, panels, teapot racing, exotic plants and more

Wednesday, July 11, 2018

Makers Brett King and Stephen Chapman are among the guests scheduled for Steampunk MidAtlantic, which takes place July 21 and 22 at the Ramada by Wyndham in Raleigh, North Carolina. Also slated to appear is pro wrestler and actor Papa Stro Maestro.

Activities include a costume contest, splendid teapot racing, and panels on various topics, including cosplay, prop making, and horror themes in steampunk. About 35 vendors will be on hand.

Also planned is a Steampunk Garden and Plant sale featuring Venus flytraps. But “a lot of it is people hanging out” with other steampunks, says event organizer John Stamey.

It’s the second edition of the gathering, which drew about 450 attendees last year, Stamey says.

King (left) is a maker, costume designer and performer who has created characters such as an Arctic Explorer and troll hunter. His work includes The Aetherologist, a talking steampunk automaton, and a restoration of an Edison Fireside Phonograph.

He’s also the founder and organizer of AutomataCon, a convention for automaton artists and collectors that was held last May at the Morris Museum in Morristown, New Jersey. Much of his work can be seen on his YouTube channel.

Steve Chapman

Chapman, aka the “Enganear” (right), is known for steampunk contraptions such as guns and jetpacks. He, too, has a YouTube channel. He’s also the author of The Stonehenge Rift, a science fiction tale set in 1890.

Tickets for the event cost $10 per day or $15 for a weekend pass. They can be ordered through the website. The hotel is located at 1520 Blue Ridge Rd., Raleigh, NC 27607. See the event Facebook page for updates.
