Steampunking in Weed
Scenes from Weed’s Annual Steampunk Festival, held near Mount Shasta in California

The city of Weed in Northern California hosted its free annual steampunk festival May 18 and 19, featuring music, artisan vendors, costumes, and a rat rod car show. The festival was presented by the local Chamber of Commerce.
Weed, located in the far north of the state, is best known for its unusual name and its proximity to Mount Shasta, one of the most prominent landmarks in the region.
And no, the city isn’t named for a certain psychoactive plant known to grow in the area. It’s named for 19th century businessman Abner Weed, who owned much of the property on which the city now stands.
Phil Rooks, who is active in the Northern California steampunk scene, took some photos and kindly allowed us to use them. See them in the gallery below.
