Highlights from Silicon Valley Comic Con in San Jose, where steampunk was just part of the action

Steampunk Mario Bros.

It doesn’t compare to San Diego Comic Con, but Silicon Valley Comic Con, Aug. 16-18 in San Jose, was an easy day trip from The Steampunk Explorer’s World Headquarters. Many folks attend comic cons to meet celebrities, and there were stars aplenty at this one, including Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jason Momoa, and several cast members from Fox TV’s Gotham. But we were more interested in meeting steampunk artists and cosplayers.

This meant we had to live up to our name, because finding steampunk creators at this event required a fair amount of exploration. Find them we did, including Lady Mechanika writer M.M. Chen and four chaps dressed as steampunk Mario Bros.

McVengers

However, the biggest scene-stealers might have been the McVengers, a cosplay mashup of Marvel superheroes and fast food chains. They’re led by McThor, who combines the hammer-wielding Asgardian god with Ronald McDonald. Others include Iron Taco, Burger LoKing, Agent Starbucks, Captain CinnaMarvel (Cinnabon), Colonel America (KFC), Baskyrie (Baskin Robbins), and Dr Strange Box (Jack in the Box).

They’re not steampunk, but that kind of out-of-the-box thinking should still be an inspiration.

See the gallery below for more scenes from the event.
