Entertainment is the focus at the Steam Dream Expo in Olde World Village near Battle Creek

Monday, June 11, 2018

Snake dancers, fire performers, and sideshow acts are among the attractions as the Steam Dream Expo returns June 15-17 to Olde World Village in Augusta, Michigan. Also scheduled to appear is steampunk favorite Vourteque, who will be spinning his electro-swing, neo-vintage tunes throughout the weekend. The venue is in southwestern Michigan, about 10 miles west of Battle Creek and 14 miles east of Kalamazoo.

Steam Dream Expo is largely an entertainment-focused event, featuring five stages with ongoing performances. It will include steampunk vendors but no panels.

The event’s VIP area will feature adult-themed entertainment and is open only to folks who are 18 or older. The acts will include aerialist/vaudeville performer Miss Claira Bell; the fire belly dance of Linae; and the burlesque music, dance and comedy of The DisDress Dolls.

The other stages are family friendly. Among the performers: Vourteque; Dinder Brothers Family Circus; the snake dancers of Steel Lotus Dance Troupe (shown here); the steampunk music of Play to the Gallery; and Bell Book and Canto, who describe their music as “ranging from contemporary Pagan, folk, renaissance, classical, and everywhere in between.”

Appearing on Saturday and Sunday in the festival amphitheater will be pirate-themed Shakespearean performers Just Happy to Be Here.

Sideshow strongman Titano Oddfellow and fire performers West Michigan Burnerz will appear in both the VIP and family areas. Oddfellow is known for feats of strength such as lifting heavy objects with his beard.

Tickets cost $10 each day, plus an additional $10 for access to the VIP area. Kids 12 and under are admitted free. Pets are not permitted, and attendees may not bring outside food or drink into the festival grounds. Hours are 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday, June 15; 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday, June 16; and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday, June 17.

Established in 2012, Olde World Village is an outdoor venue that hosts events from Easter through early December. Its biggest event is the Blackrock Medieval Fest in July. It’s located at 13215 M-96, Augusta, MI 49012.

Correction: The lead paragraph listed the incorrect dates for the event. It's been corrected to reflect that it's happening June 15-17.
