Asylum Steampunk Festival characters

An estimated 100,000 steampunk enthusiasts gathered last weekend in Lincoln, UK for the Asylum Steampunk Festival. It was the 11th year for the event, billed by its organizers as “the largest and longest running steampunk festival in the Solar System.” That might be a bit presumptuous, but we can safely say it’s the largest steampunk gathering on Planet Earth.

The festival was held at multiple venues in the city, including Lincoln Castle and Bishop Grosseteste University. The program included musical entertainment, educational presentations, an art exhibition, wacky bicycle races, tea dueling, and a costume competition.

But as with any steampunk event, the attendees themselves were major attractions. Their outfits included steampunk treatments of Star Wars and other pop culture franchises.

Two attendees, Ben Bobjr Abel and Stephen Bell, kindly allowed us to use some of their photos from the festival, which you can see in the gallery below. You don’t want to miss the climbing expedition at the end.

You can see more photos from the festival on the Welcome to the Asylum Facebook page, and in these media reports:
