Greg McKinnon’s Steampunk Guitars

A maker of cigar-box guitars in Victoria, Australia falls under the spell of steampunk

Thursday, August 8, 2019

One of the pleasures of producing The Steampunk Explorer is that we get to hear from steampunk creators around the world. One of them was Greg McKinnon, a musician and guitar-maker from Geelong, a city in Victoria, Australia.

He’s been making three-string cigar-box guitars, “not so much in the traditional way from a cigar box, but from reclaimed timbers like railway sleepers and old fence posts,” he wrote. “I love the history and features you get from recycled timbers.”

Then he discovered steampunk art. “I love the combination of brass, copper, wood, and leather. So I decided to make a couple of guitars, Australian steampunk style. The response from those first builds has been huge.” So far, he’s made four of them.

When crafting the guitars, he applies the lessons he learned making furniture from reclaimed timbers. He launched that business, Brookwood Furniture, in 1994.

If you’d like to purchase one of his guitars, you can reach him through his website. He’ll also take custom orders.

You can get a look at his workshop in the YouTube video. You can also see his work in the gallery below.
