Gaslight Gathering Set for San Diego
Panels, maker workshops, and a Saturday night concert are all on tap at this steampunk event
San Diego will get another dose of steampunk revelry as the Gaslight Gathering returns April 12-14 to the Handlery Hotel in the city’s Mission Valley area. Special guests will include Abney Park, The Eternal Frontier, Doc Phineas, steampunk magician Dyno Staats, authors Drake & McTrowell, and cosplayer Dude Vader.
This year’s theme is “Athenaeum,” a reference to old-time theater and film.
“This is a steampunk event, but we consider it a gathering more than a convention, where anyone can come to have fun and learn about much more than just steampunk,” says production committee chair Dennis Hanon. “In fact, you do not have to be a costumed person to enjoy this.”
Abney Park is one of the oldest and best-known steampunk music groups. Its latest album is New Nostalgics, featuring covers of songs originally performed between 1900 and the 1940s. The Eternal Frontier is a steampunk rock duo consisting of Baron Maximilian Von Zipple and Professor Adam Smasher. They’re frequent guests at East Coast steampunk events. Both groups will perform at a concert on Saturday night.
The program will also include panels, maker workshops, children’s crafts, and displays of creative works by local schoolchildren. Representatives of the Vista Steam Museum will have a display illustrating how steam engines work.
Starburner Galactic Couriers, a local steampunk group, will have a full-sized steampunk version of a Star Wars X Wing Fighter with sounds and working parts. “Every hour, some lucky winner will get to sit in the cockpit to go through the flight startup sequence with flight crews giving commands,” Hanon says.
The organizers are also planning a Sunday Alien Egg Hunt for kids.
A La Carte events include the Saturday night concert ($20) plus a Friday night ice cream social ($10) and a Sunday Salon ($20) with tea and edibles. The Friday night event will include screenings of two steampunk films.
Various membership options are available. They include a weekend membership ($100), weekend VIP membership ($125), and one-day memberships for Friday ($25), Saturday ($50), and Sunday ($35). The weekend and VIP memberships include all A La Carte events. The Friday and Saturday memberships include the A La Carte events for those days, but the Sunday membership does not include the Sunday Salon. VIP memberships include reserved seating at events and panels.
You can purchase tickets for the A La Carte events even if you don’t buy a membership for the daytime activities.
The Handlery Hotel is located at 950 Hotel Circle North, San Diego, CA 92108.
Gaslight Gathering is one of two steampunk conventions in San Diego. The other is the Gaslight Steampunk Expo, which takes place Sept. 26-29 at the Mission Valley Marriott Hotel.
