Rain didn’t dampen the spirits at this new event from the Big River Steampunk Festival

Sunday, May 29, 2022

Editor’s note: The inaugural Traveler’s Convention Spring Faire took place May 20-22 in Quincy, Illinois, and though a rainstorm reduced attendance on Saturday, our correspondent Curt Knapp reported that it was a promising start to what he hopes will be a recurring annual event.

The storm front hit the area on Friday night, dumping lots of rain until about 11 a.m. Saturday. Nevertheless, it began on time at 10 a.m. with an opening parade in which many participants bravely wielded umbrellas.

“It was still a great parade and included a great performance by the Drumline Institute, with instructor Chip Davis,” he reports.

Visitors were later treated to Nerf dueling, a costume contest, the pirate comedy of Little Beard and the ScallyWags, and live music from the Ragged Blade Band and singer/songwriter Thawind Mills. The festival also featured a demonstration of Scottish Highland Games and the sounds of Dr. Ozno, the Time Traveling DJ.

The event was held at Quincy’s Clat Adams Bicentennial Park overlooking the Mississippi River. “The location was beautiful and it has room for the festival to grow, which I’m sure that it will,” Curt reports.

He also lauded organizer Tammy Dunbar Riley and her crew of volunteers for a “job well done.”

Riley also manages the Big River Steampunk Festival in nearby Hannibal, Missouri. That event, one of the largest steampunk gatherings in the U.S., will be held over Labor Day weekend.
