The Steampunk Explorer is now on Patreon. In case you’re not familiar with it, Patreon is a crowdfunding platform that allows creators of various stripes to collect subscription revenue.

I never intended The Steampunk Explorer to be a profit-making venture, but I’m hoping to raise funds to cover the startup and operating costs (roughly $800 so far) and perhaps to hire freelance contributors and pay for travel to steampunk events.

Here’s how it works: You go to our Patreon page and pledge $1 or more per month. Pledges are charged to your account on the first day of each month. You can cancel or edit your pledge at any time.

In return for your pledge, you’ll get access to premium blog posts that are hosted on Patreon. These may include previews of upcoming stories, tips for steampunk creators, and other steampunk-related info that doesn’t quite fit the format of this site. You may find the occasional post that has nothing to do with steampunk, but that you might enjoy nevertheless. I’ve already posted one blog entry about the most overused font in steampunk (care to guess which one?).

I may add new tiers in the future, but for now I’m trying to keep it simple. You can pledge $1, $2, $5, $10 — whatever suits you — and again, you can cancel at any time.

You may notice that this site includes advertising. Since the site launched in March, I’ve run a couple of free ads for a friend who assisted with the City Guides. At some point, I’ll be accepting paid advertising, but I don’t expect it to be a major source of revenue.

One final note: I’ve been in the publishing business for more than 35 years, all of it on the editorial side. Most of the publications I’ve worked for have maintained strict separation between advertising and editorial considerations. Being a publisher, and dealing with the business side of things, is a new experience for me.

Even though I’m now in both roles, I intend to maintain that same editorial independence. Funding of The Steampunk Explorer, whether through advertising or Patreon, will in no way influence editorial decisions. We appreciate the patronage, but our first allegiance is always to our readers.
