Cosplay at Clockwork Alchemy 2019
Superheroes, historical figures and Spy vs. Spy enlivened the steampunk con near San Francisco
One attraction of any steampunk convention is the sight of attendees wearing fanciful costumes, and Clockwork Alchemy, held March 22-24 near San Francisco, was no exception. Some of the most elegant outfits were seen in the Dreamer’s Circus fashion show on Saturday afternoon, which included designs by Fashion Guest of Honor Karin McKechnie-Lid.
Elsewhere, we encountered superheroes (Batman and Deadpool), historical figures (Emperor Norton and Edgar Allan Poe), and even the Spy vs. Spy characters from Mad magazine. Other costumes were inspired by Alice in Wonderland or the Wild West.
To assist with the photo ops, the organizers placed scenic backdrops outside the main ballroom, including a nautical stage with a ship’s wheel.
Part of the fun was seeing the reaction of hotel guests not affiliated with the convention. More than one was heard to ask “What’s going on here?!” Even the local police were drawn by the spectacle. “They came to check us out and kept coming back with new officers because we were so cool,” says convention co-chair Sandra Forrer.
