2024: The Year in Pictures

Jan 8, 2025

Remember Snake Plissken? He’s the character played by Kurt Russell in the 1981 John Carpenter film Escape from New York. Wherever he goes, people look at him and remark, “I heard you were dead.”

You could say that steampunk is the Snake Plissken of fan cultures. Some folks are surprised that it’s still around, but one look at our calendar will tell you that it’s very much alive. You’ll see large festivals that draw thousands of people, along with conventions, costume balls, and modest gatherings held in museums, parks, and eateries.

Almost every month, The Steampunk Explorer posts galleries from these happenings. Many photos are shot by yours truly at SF Bay Area events. Other photos come from the organizers, or from guest contributors like Craig Jenkins, Curt Knapp, Bill Nesbitt, and (new this year) Kit Catlett.

Last year, I also ventured to an out-of-state event, the Key City Steampunk Convention in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.

I’ve gathered highlights from these events into the gallery below. Check out our calendar if you’d like to see them in person.

Stay tuned for more “Year in Review” stories, including the year in music, books, comics, movies, and TV.
