Paxton Gate San Francisco

824 Valencia St, San Francisco, CA 94110

This shop in San Francisco's Mission District began as "300 square feet of eccentric gardening merchandise and featured curiosities inspired by the natural world. Soon after our inception, a predilection for the bizarre side of nature became apparent, and oddities such as rare insects and taxidermy began to creep onto the scene." It moved to its current location in 1999, "allowing us to branch out into new areas including furniture, vintage and antique architectural elements, jewelry, personal goods, and a growing selection of books and home décor items."

The store includes sculptures by Evan Chambers, whose work has a steampunk look. An annex for kids is down the street. The store has licensed the name and idea to a location in Portland, Oregon.
