Kislak Center for Special Collections, Rare Books and Manuscripts

3420 Walnut Street, Philadelphia, PA 19104

Part of the Penn Libraries at the University of Pennsylvania, the Kislak Center houses more than 350,000 books and 15,000 linear feet of manuscripts. Of particular note is the Edgar Fahs Smith Memorial Collection, which is devoted to the history of chemistry and related subjects, including alchemy, pharmacology, metallurgy, and pyrotechnics.

Smith was a chemistry professor at Penn in the late 19th and early 20th centuries who amassed much of the collection. In 2000, the American Chemical Society recognized the collection as a National Historic Chemical Landmark.

The Kislak Center is on the sixth floor of Penn's Van Pelt-Dietrich Library Center.
