Time Travelers Gather in Sacramento

Time Travelers Bazaar was a small multi-genre event, but steampunk was well represented

Fans of steampunk, Doctor Who, Star Wars and other geek culture franchises converged August 25 in Sacramento as the Time Travelers Bazaar took place at the city’s Scottish Rite Masonic Center. It was a relatively small event, but it had a bit of everything — panels, costumes, authors, makers and gamers — and steampunk was well represented.

Guests included steampunk fantasy authors Angelique S. Anderson and M. Todd Gallowglas; steampunk maker Paul X. Stewart; and cosplayer Kazran Spasojevich, known for his portrayal of the 10th Doctor Who. Representatives of Clockwork Alchemy had a table promoting that event, and even lugged a large wooden backdrop to provide photo ops.

Sac Santa

Events like this are always learning opportunities, but I did not expect to be educated about Santa Claus, or more specifically the profession of being Santa Claus. That’s what happened when I encountered Ron Mullins, aka Sac Santa, who was sitting at a table in the “Guilds and Groups” area. Mullins is a member of the International Brotherhood of Real-Bearded Santas (IBRBS) and it’s clear that he takes his job seriously. He has six standing Santa gigs each holiday season, and gets additional work through a couple of party planners. He connected with the party planners after dumping his agent about two years ago.

One challenge is finding work in the off-season, so now he has a side business playing Gandalf, the wizard from The Lord of the Rings.

Readers may recall my June encounter with a Pirate Santa, but I’m still waiting to meet a Steampunk Santa.

Time Travelers Bazaar is hosted by JBS Productions, which has already scheduled next year’s event for Saturday, August 3 at the same location. In the meantime, check out the photo gallery below.
