Maine Museum to Host Steampunk Fest
The Southern Maine Steampunk Fair is the Brick Store Museum's largest annual event
Steampunk authors Joy Reed and Leanna Renee Hieber are among the guests slated to appear at the Southern Maine Steampunk Fair, on Saturday, August 4 at the Brick Store Museum in Kennebunk, Maine. The indoor and outdoor event will also feature Victorian lawn games, tea dueling, a Steampunk High Tea, a maker “creation station” for kids and adults, and more than 30 steampunk artists and makers selling their wares.
Reed, author of the Madame Seraphina Fox series, will present talks on Victorian spiritualism and steampunk fashion. Hieber, whose titles include Strangely Beautiful, Perilous Prophecy, and The Eterna Files trilogy, will discuss historical fantasy. Both authors will participate in book signings.
This is the fourth year for the fair, which has become the museum’s largest annual event. “The staff here saw steampunk as a fantastic example of how history can be playful, interesting and creative all at the same time,” explains Cynthia Walker, the museum’s executive director. “In an era where museums are continually trying to reach new audiences with history programs, steampunk truly helped the museum branch out into something brand-new.”
Founded in 1936, the museum focuses on the art, history and culture of the Kennebunks region in southern Maine. It occupies a group of buildings constructed between 1810 and 1860.
Fair admission costs $5. Tickets for the High Tea cost $30 and include admission to the fair. The tea, which takes place between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m., is limited to 40 guests. Snacks will be available for sale for those not attending the tea.
The fair takes place from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The museum is located at 117 Main Street, Kennebunk, ME 04043. It’s about 27 miles south of Portland, 70 miles northeast of Manchester, NH and 90 miles north of Boston. See the website for more info.
