Art Car Jamming in Vallejo

Obtainium Works offers a close-up look at Neverwas Haul and other steampunk wonders

Saturday, July 21, 2018

The Obtainium Works Art Car Jam, held Saturday, July 21 in Vallejo, California, was a showcase for wild and whimsical mobile contraptions, many with steampunk appeal. The event was a warmup for the 7th Annual Obtainium Cup Contraptor's Rally, which takes place Sunday at Alden Park on Vallejo's Mare Island.

Obtainium Works is an arts organization best known in the steampunk world for Neverwas Haul, a three-story Victorian house on wheels. Saturday's event, held at the group's art car studio, allowed attendees to get an up-close look at that project along with other mobile wonders. It also included a small number of steampunk vendors and an entertaining fashion show "choreographed to feature outfits for your new art car."

Sunday's Obtainium Cup rally is a larger event in which art vehicles will navigate a course on Mare Island, encountering flying monkeys, robots, zombies and mad hatters along the way. The event will also include live music, food trucks and steampunk vendors. The festivities begin at 11 a.m., with the rally itself taking place at 3 p.m.

Alden Park is on 8th Street between Walnut Ave. and Railroad Ave. on Mare Island. See the Obtainium Works website for more info.
